Australia’s Strongest Man & Beyond

THIS entry has been a long time coming. You know me, and how I don’t like to dwell on the negatives… but end up doing so almost fatalistically. Well, my first official campaign for Australia’s Strongest Man was, as they say, a mixed bag. I don’t know what I was expecting from myself, truly, given my relative inexperience and injuries, which I have harped on about at length. Middle of the pack would have been great… as it was, I only attempted 4 of the 5 events, and came in second last out of a field of 8.
Mike Jones, Me & Warick Brandt
A.S.M. 2014 Events
The first event, the yoke walk, was changed to a car walk just prior to the comp; same weight but very different technique. I struggled with the much lower pickup and balance. This event also fucked my knees, good and proper.

The second event, from memory, was a 143 kilo p/h Farmers walk, with steel girders which were each something like 10 meters long! I made one 20 meter run of the track, but just couldn’t pick them up again for another trip.

Third was the 300 kilogram axle deadlift. Again, I managed one rep and only one rep, with my raw back and buggered knees.

The overhead press medley was a dismal failure for me, as predicted; the first press was a 120 kilo log… my personal best is 115 axle, I think. Just couldn’t clean it into place, let alone press it. And the really sad thing is my pressing strength is improving! It’s just annoyingly slow going.

And finally came the carry medley, and I physically couldn’t hold myself in a loading position anymore. My knees were destroyed. I informed Uncle Bill that I was throwing in the towel, went back to my seat and swallowed some pain killers and anti-inflammatories. And that pretty much was all she wrote for me… I’m just glad I got to meet some famous people in the Iron game, prior to the comp. The strongest of the strong, both in Australia and the world over, were at the Melbourne FitX this year. Warrick Brandt walked up to me and said ‘G’day Abaddon.’ That’s right; Warrick freaking Brandt knows my name. The first time I ever met him, I asked if he was Marc Wells!

Lastly, I’d like to say congratulations once again to Ben Simpson; a top bloke and clearly deserving of the title of Australia’s Strongest Man for 2014. And of course WA’s own Daniel Macri, who has been battling major injuries himself, but who nonetheless took second place this year. Way to go brother!

*yeah… finally pulled my 300 kilo dead. And I did it at my new home; Genesis Fitness Bentley!

70 kgs x 6
80 kgs x 5
90 kgs x 5
100 kgs x 5
110 kgs x 4*

DB OHP (strict)

right 40 kgs x 3

Bench press (flat)
80 kgs x 10
100 kgs x 9
120 kgs x 2

Klokov press
20 kgs x 15 reps x 3

*I actually think I miss-loaded this set
**Needed to give this a little push… definitely down on strength since DB overhead press was put on the back burner. I really enjoy this event, and am keen to continue building my right side back up to equal my left.

NOT Squat Thursday March 27th

warmup & stretch!

45* Leg press (base weight unknown)
160 kgs x 10
240 kgs x 8 reps x 4

Good Mornings w/standard bar*
70 kgs x 5 x 2
90 kgs x 5 x 2

*these were terrible! The straight bar doesn’t stay low on my back, and keeps rolling up onto the neck, which is annoying. I can’t do more than 5 reps sets before the riding up becomes an issue. I will have to find another way of performing this movement…or ask Genesis management for a cambered (or even safety squat) bar.

Events Training Saturday March 29th

Yoke walk
135 kgs x 15 meters x 2
215 kgs x 15 meters
295 kgs x 15 meters
375 kgs x 15 meters – 1 drop, not timed, but still considered my best run at this weight

Farmers walk
90 kgs p/h x 25 meters
110 kgs p/h x 25 meters
130 kgs p/h x 20 meters – just coz that’s where the picks were left. Again, everything felt good and the run was pretty quick, for that weight.

I walked away from this training session without having aggravated anything. Bonus.
