Legs Thursday: The Axle Squat

THE AXLE squat is new for me. I’ve previously grown accustomed to squatting heavy with a cambered bar, while rehabbing my right shoulder; the first serious injury I sustained in the sport of Strongman. The good news is that, with the axle, I’ll be much better prepared for squatting in PL comps I might enter in the future. The bad news is that, until Genesis gets a cambered or safety squat bar, I literally have no choice but to squat with the axle. I don’t fit inside a standard barbell. And, based on what I’ve seen recently, I expect at some point in the future to have to take the axle off of some dumbass doing something silly with it, just so I can squat.

Made some legit progress tonight with a straight bar; I’ve not had more than 160 or so on my back with a competition spec bar in the past. It is certainly different, and balance became an issue as I approached 200… I also noticed some wrist discomfort due to the load and angle of my grip. I will get used to it.

My best squat remains a double of 230 kilos with a cambered bar at PTC, and 200 for 8 reps at the Pit some time earlier. I was squatting to a box on this occasion, and bouncing at the bottom, which screwed my knees, and this was pretty much the beginning of what became persistent knee issues for me… I went looking for the entries in my old blog but couldn’t find them.
