Press Wednesday: More Axle & Log

TONIGHT I thought I’d mix things up a bit and intersperse log with axle. Programming my press has always been tricky; I have the weakest press of any aspiring Strongman I know thanks to having ‘small shoulder bones’ and also a labrum tear and subsequent surgery has played a part in stalling my progress. And then there’s the tendon issues, which have only recently abated thanks to the 20 reps sets of pinwheels Joel advised I tack on to the end of my squat session. Still not quite ready to Kroc row an 80 kilo Kettle bell or do weighted pull-ups like I used to… but I’ll get there.

But even in consideration of these things, getting my press to a measly 120 has become an epic trial. I burn out too quickly when doing near-max effort stuff, so I’m going to be incorporating more 20 rep sets of strict axle press, like I was doing last year. If I’m patient, this will reap dividends down the track. I am also strongly considering only incline benching from here on, as that more directly carries over to my OHP. The angle of the incline bench I used tonight seemed to be targeting that effectively, and I want to push hard with it and see where it takes me.

Providing everything feels good, tomorrow night I think I’m going to use some machines. Maybe if I don’t start off rooting a knee I’ll actually get to some hack squats, and I can use a safer ROM on the leg press and load it up to 300 or so…
